Gravel pit 1/1000 in Newfoundland. If the weather was better, NL would be a vanlifer’s paradise. There are gravel pits along the highway and many of the side roads where it’s common to spend a night or two in a camper. Although the government is trying to crack down on gravel pit camping, NL is a big island with not a lot of people so it’s kind of the way of just what people do. This spot seems to have been an old quarry so it’s basically a dirt road off of the highway that leads to a big clearing filled with dirt mounds. Because it’s got a tree barrier from the road, the road noise is surprisingly not so bad. We didn’t explore further past the mounds but there are probably plenty of spots even further from the road. No facilities of course but it’s not far from Deer Lake, which has got pretty much all you need. Great place to stay after getting off the Port-aux-Basques ferry and you’re only an hour away from Gros Morne the next day.
