Formerly a bustling Route 66 town, San Jon is now a sleepy stopover off the I-40 that’s worth stopping in for a free overnight stay. Being a city park, it is complete with covered picnic tables and bathrooms that are open seasonally (water was off and doors were locked in March). There’s a bit of road noise from the rumble strips on the adjacent road but overall, it’s a pretty quiet and convenient spot. There’s also a gas station right next door with bathrooms, food, coffee and well, gas.

Max stay is 1 night.
